About us

Introduction

Since our beginning in 1993, the Graduate Institute of Art Studies has established itself as the first and leading Master of Arts program that integrates Eastern and Western modern art history in Taiwan. It has cultivated numerous young art historians and professionals in the arts and culture sector. As part of the College of the Humanities, the Institute has close relationships with the literature, philosophy, and history departments, and closely collaborates with the Art Center and Visual Culture Research Center. Students come from a variety of backgrounds and receive interdisciplinary and rigorous training in art history and visual culture studies. Our alumni fill top posts in university and high-school education and pursue successful careers in the fields of publishing, creative industry, galleries, museums, and public cultural bureaus, etc.

Mission

Our institute's mission is twofold: to establish art studies as a foundational discipline within the humanities and to synergize with the development of our research-focused university. We achieve this through strategic collaborations with the College of Liberal Arts and the Consortium of Taiwan Universities, broadening the scope and depth of art studies research. Additionally, we prioritize forging partnerships with cognate research institutes domestically and engaging in international academic exchanges to uphold global scholarly standards.

Educational goals

Our pedagogical endeavor is centered on nurturing specialized talent in the realms of art history and art theory research. This commitment is not merely predicated on the necessity of scholarly rigor but also on the imperative of fostering a robust academic underpinning requisite for the practical application of knowledge, such as in arts administration and cultural policymaking. To this end, our institute espouses an inclusive ethos in art studies, fostering multifaceted inquiry and methodologies. We provide rigorous academic training, focusing on art history, aesthetics, and art theory, to develop students' critical thinking skills.

Our faculty members are dedicated to studying print culture, photographic discourse, history of collections and exhibitions, and art historical narratives of museums. In addition to in-depth exploration of various specialized fields, we emphasize issues related to the exchange of artistic and cultural ideas between East and West, examining the interactions between the two in the realm of art from a global perspective since the modern era.
